Tom McCormack wins Junior of the Year award
Up-and-coming enduro motorcycle racer, Tom McCormack, capped off an impressive season when he was recently awarded the coveted Motorcycling Queensland Junior Achiever of the Year Award. The honor was a celebrated addition to the 16-year-old’s 2009 racing achievements, including winning the Queensland Junior Enduro Championship and NSW Junior Sprint Championship and gaining a number two national ranking. The Byron Bay racer also won Queensland’s SEQ Enduro Series, Sprint Cross-Country Series and Enduro-Cross Series.
“Winning the Junior of the Year Award was an unreal feeling, it’s really hard to put into words, actually,” McCormack said.
“Juniors from all disciplines were nominated and there are a lot of great junior riders in the state in all the disciplines, so competition was really stiff.
“Winning the award is something I’ve been trying to do the last two-years, and this was my final year as a junior, so it was really my last chance. “I’m stoked to have won. It was a great way to finish off the year.”
McCormack is currently at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for the 2009 Under 21’s Motocross/Off-Road Training Camp. The camp, which started on Tuesday, is aimed at helping the country’s elite improve their fitness and speed. McCormack said he was “having a blast” at the camp and had “already learned heaps”.
“I’m moving straight to the Pro Class next year, so I’m training hard to make sure I’m as fit and fast as possible,” he said.
Tom McCormack is current Yamaha Junior Queensland Enduro Champion, NSW Sprint Junior Champion, Yamaha SEQ Enduro Series winner and is ranked second in the country for Junior Off-Road racers. Tom’s ultimate goal is to make the sport he loves his profession and become the fastest in Australia.
Tom would like to thank his sponsors: PRO MOTORCYCLE’S QUEENSLAND ENDURO TEAM, YAMAHA QUEENSLAND, AXO, SHARK HELMETS, BELRAY, CHAD’S OFF-ROAD SET-UP’S, DID, BB FREIGHT SERVICE AND UNIFILTER and his mum and dad for taking him to all the races – about 50,000km’s of travel every year.
