Tom McCormack lands second Pro Class podium

Byron Bay dirt bike star, Tom McCormack, has not wasted any time establishing himself among the country’s top senior enduro motorcycle racers.

The 16-year-old, who is the first rider in Queensland history to jump straight from the junior ranks to the Pro Class, landed his second podium finish today in the hotly contested class.

McCormack (of the Yamaha Pro Motorcycles Queensland Enduro Team) again came third to the state’s top two riders: fellow Yamaha pilot Kirk Hutton and AJ Roberts, at the opening round of the Queensland Enduro-Cross Series held at Ironpot, near Kingaroy.

Today’s event attracted a huge field of about 250 riders.

McCormack also finished the first race of the season last weekend in third: today he managed to close the gap to the second spot on the podium, finishing just four-seconds behind three-time Australian Off-Road Champion, Roberts.

“[On the Pro Class podium] is where I want to be. Third isn’t where I want to be, I’m just going to work on it and do the best I can,” McCormack said.

“I know where I want to be, I make a lot of mistakes, if I could keep it on two wheels I know I could go better and that’s what I’m gonna work on.

“I am happy with how I went today. The track was challenging, I never really felt comfortable after I had a huge crash in the first lap.

“After the crash I just put my head down and went hard for the other four laps… the track was different, it’s been a while since I’ve raced a track with long grass, rocks and dust.

“The club did a good job with what they had, it’s good to have races like that sometimes.

“My new YZ250F was great, I was fortunate enough to get a new one at the start of the week – everyone seemed to be complaining about how their bikes were handling, but mine felt awesome.”

Tom’s first national meeting of the year will be rounds one and two of the Yamaha Australian Off-Road Championships to be held at Port Macquarie, NSW, on March 13th and 14th (for more info visit www.aorcracing.com.au).

“I’ll be racing the Championship, or Pro, E1 class. I’ll see where I’m at after the first round, I’ve never really raced any of these guys before,” he said.

“I’m looking for a podium finish in the class. I know the first round, which will be a 2.5-hour cross-country will be tough, but I’m on a really good training program this year,  my trainer’s working really hard to get me ready for it and I’m riding heaps so it should be fun.”

Tom McCormack is the youngest rider to go straight to the pro class in Queensland enduro racing. He is current Yamaha Junior Queensland Enduro Champion, Yamaha SEQ Enduro Series winner and is ranked second in the country for Junior Off-Road racers.

Tom’s ultimate goal is to make the sport he loves his profession and become the fastest in Australia.
